George G. Coffinas - Justice, Town of Haverstraw
Judge George G. Coffinas was appointed Town
Justice in June 2024. Judge Coffinas has practiced law for
over forty years. He is admitted to the bar of the State of
New York as well as the United States District Courts for the
Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Judge Coffinas
received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from New
York University, magna cum laude, with honors, in 1979, where
he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most
prestigious academic honor society in the United States. He
then received his Juris Doctor degree from the George Washington
University Law School in Washington, D.C. in 1982.
Immediately
following his admission to the bar, Judge Coffinas entered into the
private practice of law, initially in the field of criminal law,
where he acted as defense counsel in a number of high profile
federal and state prosecutions. He then transitioned to civil
litigation, primarily in the fields of personal injury and medical
malpractice. Judge Coffinas is one of the most experienced
trial attorneys in the Hudson Valley, having tried in excess of 200
jury trials. He has been called upon to lecture on trial practice to
local bar associations in the metropolitan area. His trial verdicts
and settlements number in the tens of millions of dollars. In
2020 he helped found Neimark Coffinas & Lapp LLP, one of Rockland
County’s most well-known personal injury and medical malpractice law
firms.
Judge
Coffinas is a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers
Association, the American Association for Justice, and is a member
of the board of Directors of the Rockland County Bar Association.
Demonstrating his varied interests and abilities, he helped found
and served as a director of a community bank located in New York
City; he served as president of the board of trustees of Saints
Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn; and, he is
a national referee for U.S.A. Judo, the national governing body of
that sport.
